Dermal Fillers

As we age, it’s only natural for our skin to lose volume and elasticity, which leads to unwanted lines and wrinkles, as well as general sagging, particularly from the mid-face down. Dermal fillers are a safe and effective way to reverse these effects and create a more youthful appearance and rejuvenate your facial features.

The most common reasons why patients choose to receive dermal fillers include:

  • Lip enhancement
  • Creating more defined cheekbones and jawlines
  • Overall facial volume restoration: ‘Liquid lift’
  • Lower eyelid rejuvenation

The dermal fillers used at Allure Clinic in Toowoomba have a proven safety record and contain no animal proteins, so no skin tests are necessary prior to treatment. There are some clinics that also offer collagen-based fillers but these have slowly started becoming less popular because there is a higher risk of side effects and the results don’t always look as natural.

Depending on what you want to achieve, additional treatments can be incorporated into your personalised treatment plan.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How Dermal Fillers Work?

Before you are deemed a good candidate for dermal fillers, you will need to consult with one of the qualified clinicians at our clinic. During your consultation, your medical history will be reviewed, your skin will be examined and your aesthetic goals will be discussed so that a personalised treatment plan can be developed.

On the day of your treatment, a topical anaesthetic can be used to numb the area that will be treated but most patients are able to withstand the treatment without this. Whether or not you would prefer an anaesthetic is a personal preference and it is always an option.

To achieve your desired result, several small injections will be applied to the problem areas of your face or other areas such as the hands. Your treatment will last about 60 minutes to ensure you are comfortable and we can answer your questions.

The main component in fillers is a gel-like substance that attracts water molecules, which is how it is able to hydrate and plump up the skin. What’s more, if for any reason you aren’t happy with your results, the effects can easily be reversed using a dissolving enzyme.

While both dermal fillers and anti-wrinkle injections are designed to reduce the signs of ageing, they do offer slightly different effects. Anti-wrinkle injections help relax the muscles that are responsible for wrinkles and deep furrows, but dermal fillers plump up the skin in order to iron out any unwanted wrinkles.

The number of treatments that you require to achieve your desired result will depend on how you react to the treatment and what your specific aesthetic goals are. It’s always better to adopt a less-is-more approach when it comes to cosmetic injections – you can always add more later on.

Should I combine fillers with anti-wrinkle injections?

It is definitely possible to combine the two treatments if you feel that you would benefit from both. Not all patients need dermal fillers and anti-wrinkle injections though – you can discuss this with a doctor during your consultation. If you do decide to undergo both treatments, it’s recommended that you start with anti-wrinkle injections and schedule your filler session two weeks later. If you regularly undergo other cosmetic treatments such as facials or micro-needling, you should also wait at least a week after each injection session to schedule your appointment.

Will flying affect my dermal filler results?

Some websites might suggest that the changes in air pressure in the cabin can affect the results of your dermal filler session but this isn’t the case. It’s perfectly safe to fly on the same day as your appointment. If your flight will be taking you to a holiday destination, it’s best to wait at least a week before you spend time in the sun or very cold temperatures. Once you are ready to suntan, be sure to protect the treated area, as well as the rest of your skin, throughout the day.

Should I be concerned about cold sores?

The risk of developing a cold sore after your appointment is very rare. However, if you are prone to cold sores, it’s recommended that you take the necessary anti-viral medication prior to your appointment.

What should I expect after my filler appointment?

The results of dermal fillers are immediately noticeable and your skin will continue benefitting from it over the next few weeks as collagen levels increase. Dermal filler results tend to last anywhere from 6 – 18 months, depending on how quickly your body metabolises the filler. Top-up treatments will be required should you wish to maintain your results.

Since it is a natural substance, there will be little to no side effects after your dermal filler appointment. If anything, some patients experience some mild redness and swelling but this generally subsides within a few hours. If you’re choosing to enhance your lips, there may be some slight bruising and tenderness but this will fade relatively quickly. Any discomfort that you experience can easily be treated with over the counter painkillers. Most patients choose to return to work immediately after their session because no downtime is required.

It’s important not to touch or rub the treated area for the first two days after your treatment. Any strenuous activities that lead to excessive sweating should be avoided for 24 hours – this includes spending time in hot sunlight or a sauna.

Following your treatment, your clinician will provide you with some guidance on how you can maintain your results. For one, having a good at-home skincare regime will ensure you see the best final results after your treatment. Cutting back on alcohol and caffeine can also help. Naturally, sticking to your treatment plan and top-up sessions will ensure you always look your best.

Are dermal filler injections really safe?

Filler injections are very safe, particularly because the main ingredient is naturally produced by the body. Millions of patients have benefitted from this treatment and it is TGA-approved too. The only time that cosmetic injections become unsafe is when they’re administered by an unqualified and inexperienced practitioner in an environment that isn’t sterile. At Allure Clinic, we adhere to the highest standards and patients can always expect a safe and positive experience.

Is it fine for me to take pain killers before and after my appointment?

It’s best to avoid any anti-inflammatory drugs before and after your dermal filler session as it can make any bruising, swelling and bleeding much worse. It’s essential that you provide your doctor with a full list of medications and supplements that you’re currently taking during your consultation to avoid these kinds of complications. An anaesthetic will be used to keep you comfortable during your session and you can use a cold compress to alleviate any swelling and discomfort afterwards. Very few patients experience extreme levels of discomfort after receiving dermal fillers, so this need not be a cause for concern. It’s also best to avoid an excessive amount of alcohol after your session as this can also exacerbate bruising and swelling.
