Breast Implant Health Check Toowoomba

Procedures

At Allure Clinic, we build personalised treatment plans using a multi-modality approach. Our Practitioners may combine treatments designed to complement one another, with the aim of supporting your skin over time. Your consultation is an opportunity to discuss how our range of treatment options could be used together and whether they may be suitable for you.

Breast implants are medical devices, and like all medical devices, they need monitoring over time. At Allure Clinic in Toowoomba, this appointment gives you dedicated time to review your implant history, talk through any concerns, and assess your implants with clinical examination and ultrasound.

Appointments are conducted by A/Prof Mark Magnusson, and patients are welcome regardless of where their original surgery was performed. Patients may arrange an appointment due to new symptoms or changes, or to have implants assessed after they have been in place for many years.

Why Implant Monitoring Matters

Implant-related concerns can develop years after surgery, and early changes are not always obvious. Breast implants are not lifetime devices, and the chance of certain complications increases with implant age. Monitoring may be considered even when you feel well and don’t have symptoms.

Patients may arrange an implant check if they notice changes in size, shape, or firmness, pain or discomfort, new or unexplained swelling, suspected rupture, or if their implants have been in place for a long time. Silicone implant rupture can be difficult to detect by feel alone because the gel may remain contained within the surrounding tissue capsule. In some cases, rupture is only identified when imaging is performed, which is why ultrasound can be helpful as part of an assessment.

Disclaimer: A referral from your GP is required before attending a consultation for any cosmetic surgical procedure.

What This Appointment Can Help Assess

Implant Rupture

All implants have an outer shell that can weaken over time. With saline implants, rupture often leads to a noticeable decrease in size as the saline is absorbed. With silicone implants, changes may be harder to detect without imaging.

Capsular Contracture

After implant surgery, the body forms a thin layer of scar tissue around the implant (the capsule). In some patients, the scar tissue thickens and tightens over time, which can lead to increased firmness, discomfort, or changes in breast shape.

Fluid Collection (Seroma)

A seroma is a collection of fluid that can build up around an implant. Fluid collections can occur in the early period after surgery, but any new or ongoing fluid that appears months or years later should be checked.

BIA-ALCL Awareness

Breast implant–associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) is a rare condition of the immune system that develops in the tissue around some breast implants, and it is not breast cancer. It tends to develop several years after implant placement, and one of the more common signs is persistent swelling, particularly when it starts months or years after surgery. If you notice swelling, pain, changes in size or shape, or other unexplained symptoms, an assessment can help clarify the cause and the next steps.

What Happens at Your Appointment

Your appointment takes place in rooms at Allure Clinic. You’ll meet with A/Prof Magnusson to go through your implant history, any symptoms you’ve noticed, and what you want to understand about your implants. A clinical assessment is then paired with an in-clinic ultrasound.

Ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging method that uses sound waves to create real-time images of soft tissues. For implant assessment, it is used to check implant integrity and look for changes in the surrounding tissues. In some situations, additional imaging such as an MRI may be recommended. If that applies to you, this will be explained, and the appropriate referral can be arranged.

Appointment Options And Fees

Option 1 — Implant Status Check: $220

A 15-minute consultation for patients with no specific concerns who would like an assessment of implant condition. An in-clinic ultrasound is included. This option can be used for routine monitoring or to establish a baseline assessment.

Option 2 — Full Assessment Consultation: $450

A 45–50 minute consultation for patients with specific concerns, such as pain, discomfort, swelling, or changes in size, shape, or firmness. This appointment allows more time for discussion, clinical assessment, and an in-clinic ultrasound.

As A/Prof Magnusson is a specialist, you will need a referral from your GP for a consultation. With a valid referral, you may be eligible for a Medicare rebate on the consultation component. You can contact the clinic before your appointment to check the likely out-of-pocket costs in your situation.

Who This Service Is For

This appointment is for any patient with breast implants. You do not need to have had your original surgery with A/Prof Magnusson. Patients include those who have had cosmetic augmentation locally or elsewhere, and patients who have had reconstructive surgery following breast cancer treatment.

There’s no single right time to book. You may attend as part of ongoing monitoring, because something feels different, or because your implants haven’t been assessed in some time.

What To Bring

If you have details of your original surgery and implants, bring what you can (implant brand/model, approximate surgery date, and the clinic or surgeon name). If you don’t have these records, bring whatever information you do have available. Please also bring a current GP referral.
