Postpartum Surgery
There is nothing quite like that first moment when your little one is placed into your arms. Pregnancy, breastfeeding and parenting in general can bring about some incredible changes in our lives. Our bodies can often bear the greatest scars of these milestone memory-making moments.
Postpartum surgery can address several areas of concern that may arise for mothers after pregnancy and breastfeeding. These include the following.
- The abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck. This procedure removes skin and fat from the abdomen that is resistant to a healthy diet and exercise.
- Breast surgery. An augmentation mammoplasty, reduction mammoplasty or lift mastopexy can alter the shape and size of the breasts.
- Liposuction. The procedure can target excess fat deposits after childbirth. Liposuction can help to address any areas of fat on the inner or outer thighs.
- A bilateral buttock augmentation procedure can help to augment and elevate this area.
Postpartum surgery is performed in one single procedure, combining multiple procedures into one. There are several factors that can impact the techniques that will be used, including the amount of restorative surgery needed, incision placement, and the type of implant used with breast augmentation mammoplasty.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Am I a good candidate for a postpartum surgery?
Not every woman is going to be a good candidate for the postpartum surgery. You should be in good overall health, without any underlying medical conditions. You should have realistic expectations from the surgery.
It is important that you are at or very close to your ideal body weight. Any great fluctuations in your weight, in either direction, can impact the results of your surgery. Liposuction and other cosmetic procedures are not suitable replacements for healthy weight loss.
You should also be finished with growing your family. Subsequent pregnancies can return your breasts and tummy to the condition that they were prior to your postpartum surgery.
What will postpartum surgery do for my tummy?
Most of the body changes that pregnancy brings with it take place on the stomach. The skin stretches to accommodate the growing little one, and often the abdominal muscles can tear away. This can result in the appearance of excess skin on the stomach after pregnancy. No workout is going to get that skin to snap back into its pre-pregnancy shape. The abdominoplasty procedure can remove that excess loose skin and repair separated abdominal muscles.
What will postpartum surgery do for my breasts?
Both pregnancy and breastfeeding can alter the shape, size and position of your breasts. You may have breast laxity or ptosis due to excess skin. Both pregnancy and breastfeeding can lead to breast size increasing, but see a decrease in volume once you stop breastfeeding. Postpartum surgery can increase the volume of the breasts, as well as elevate the breasts, depending on the patient’s requirements.
If your breasts are on the larger side, you may benefit better from a breast reduction mammoplasty with mastopexy surgery. During your consultation, you will learn about which of the breast procedures we offer can best benefit you.
What should I expect from a postpartum surgery recovery?
Every patient recovers at her own pace. You should expect to be out of work, recovering, for between 10 to 14 days. Expect to experience some discomfort during the first postoperative days, along with some stiffness in your tummy and tightness across your chest. Pain management options will be discussed so that you are as comfortable as possible during your recovery.
You should limit your activities during the first two postoperative weeks. This includes lifting your children and working out. You should have the help of a family member, so that you can still meet the needs of your family.
By the sixth week of recovery you should be cleared to return to your normal routine and activities.
Will I have significant scars after surgery?
Scars are always going to be a factor with surgery. Your surgeon will take steps to minimise scarring, with well-placed incisions. Proper postoperative incision care will help to minimise the appearance of your scars, but they will never fully disappear.
How much does postpartum surgery cost?
There are a number of factors that can impact the cost of your surgery. You may struggle to find exact numbers listed online. By law surgeons are prohibited in posting a schedule of surgical fees.
Prior to getting a complete breakdown of costs, you will need to have a consultation that allows your surgeon to discuss your goals with you.
The costs of your surgery will be tailored to your individual cosmetic goals. Some of the factors impacting costs may include some of the following.
- The techniques used during surgery
- The complexity of your individual case
- Costs of the anaesthetist
- Hospital fees
- The costs of breasts implants
- Follow-up appointments
- Compression garments and medication costs
